We are often asked where we get our rescues from. In some cases, the dogs are owner surrenders, due to causes such as:- Owner illness- Finances- Death in the family.In other cases, we get dogs who have survived difficult experience, including:- Abandonment- Strays- Puppy mills- Korean meat farms- High-kill shelters- Hoarding situations- Mistreatment and malnourishmentDC SIR frees dogs from these circumstances, and helps them find new lives where they can enjoy their independence!Give the gift of freedom this Independence Day by donating to DC SIR's 4th of July fund here. DC Shiba Inu Rescue wants each person’s companion dog to thrive in a healthy and enriching environment. It’s great that you take Fido on a walk, but peeing on the Johnsons’ mailbox for 5 months straight can get boring. We also know that not everyone can bring their Shiba to off-leash events, such as our monthly meetups.With that in mind, DC SIR is having its official summer walk/hike at Great Falls Park in Virginia. This guided walk, approximately 3 miles in total, through the magnificent Great Falls Park, gives your companion dog an opportunity to smell new scents and meet new people and dogs without being overwhelmed in a fenced meetup. DCSIR has mapped out a group walk on the scenic River Trail, down to Great Falls’ Sandy Landing and returning on the Matildaville Trail. Come to PetValu in Manassas, VA on Saturday, April 20th from 11am to 4pm, for their National Adoption Weekend Event! There will be many rescues, trainers, food distributors, free samples and fun times! DCSIR will have a table there to educate people about the breed and provide information about our foster program and volunteer positions. You can also meet some of our adoptable dogs at the event! Please come out and support us as we try to inform the public about rescue and this wonderful breed!

See photos from the event.As the Shiba Inu is Japan’s National Treasure, we felt it would be a great idea to bring our Shiba pals for a casual walk past the cherry blossoms! DCSIR will be meeting at the Jefferson Memorial on April 7, 2013 at 3pm for a National Park Service Ranger-led walk, and is inviting all of our Shiba-owner and Shiba-enthusiast friends to join us. There will be other breeds there, but none will be prettier than our foxy cuties! It will be a good chance for the Shibas to honor their heritage and enjoy the cherry blossoms!Don’t forget a leash, bags and water!
