Hello everyone, my name is now Kentaro, and it means ‘big boy’ in Japanese, which is very fitting because I weigh in around 40 pounds! I’m a very muscular shiba and maybe a little “fluffy” too. I am just over a year old and I have only ever lived with one family my whole life, but their circumstances changed, and they were unable to care for me any longer. So, they found DC SIR and felt comfortable they would find me a loving forever home who could handle my puppy-like energy. My owners did wildlife rescue, so I was surrounded by all kinds of animals growing up and I loved them all! I do well with dogs, cats, birds, and even my raccoon buddy! However, I did also like to chase small quick animals, like moles and rabbits. I also really love people. When the DC SIR volunteers came to pick me up, I was a little scared at first. Then they gave me a few treats and I was jumping in their laps and coving them in kisses. I love to cuddle and will do anything to have my belly rubbed!! That’s the best! Once the nice volunteer gave me a belly rub, we were besties. I have had regular vet care, and I am a healthy and active Shiba Inu. I had a long drive to my foster home with the nice volunteers. I spent most of the four-hour car ride to my foster’s house snuggling one of the volunteers. I was a little confused at first when I got to my new foster home, but after a few hours and LOTS of boiled chicken I started to settle in. It was a big change because I came from a rural house to the big city! Who knew buildings could be so BIG! I think with some time I am really going to love getting all the attention for myself from my foster mom. I am a young boy, and I am still learning how to channel all my energy. I will need regular exercise in my forever home as well as a training contract at the time of adoption to ensure that I learn how to redirect all my energy into productive activities. I’m super smart as well, so the DC SIR volunteers are sure that I’m going to make the perfect pet for an active home. Is that home with you???

UPDATE: Kentaro is a young 13-month-old large male Shiba Inu! He is a big boy at 48lbs with a big heart and goofy demeanor. Kentaro is a gentle giant with a lot of energy and loves to be entertained with toys, games, and other dogs. Kentaro lived with one family that did wildlife rescue, so he is excellent with a variety of animals from dogs to cats and even raccoons!
Kentaro is in foster care in an apartment in DC as an only dog and has done well. However, we feel he would do best in a home with another dog. He loves to play with other dogs, and we saw him absolutely overjoyed when playing with another dog!
Body Handling: Kentaro is excellent with body handling, from baths to nail trims. He is gentle with taking treats and playing with toys.
People: Kentaro loves people, and if he thinks you are special, he will roll on you and snuggle on your lap. Kentaro is fine greeting strangers at home and away from home.
Dogs: Kentaro loves friendly dogs, and you can immediately see a pep in his paws when he has a friendly dog with whom he can romp. Kentaro will zoom and prance around other dogs and may ignore people in order to play play play with his furry friends.
Health: Kentaro is up to date on core vaccines, microchipped, and neutered with no known medical conditions.
Considerations: Kentaro has some basic training needs that are easily resolved with competent reward-based training. These include: counter-surfing – this tall guy will steal your sandwich from the counter if it is close enough for him to reach. Destuffing toys may consist of playing with pillows or inappropriate household items, so redirecting to appropriate play items is necessary. Kentaro also needs more training on walking on a leash, and he may be easily distracted and zigzag. We found that Kentaro can get bored easily when left alone and may chew on inappropriate items, but when he is in a multidog home, we did not have this issue.
