Hello everyone, my name is now Emiko, and it means ‘smiling child’ in Japanese. I am a 5-year-old female Shiba Inu. I was found as a stray in Baltimore. The shelter was able to track my owners from my microchip. They contacted them and said I was in the shelter, but my owners said to go ahead and keep me because they didn’t want me anymore. I lived with them for four and a half years. The shelter could see that I was completely terrified and shut down in the shelter environment so they called DC SIR to take me into their Rescue so that I could live in a home with a family until they found me the right forever home. When my foster first came to pick me up, I was very nervous and shy. The world is scary in the shelter with other dogs crying. I was nervous about leaving with the DC SIR volunteer but happy to get into a car and let my foster mom feed me some boiled chicken. I was a little nervous on the car ride home, but quickly settled in and curled up next to my foster mom on the couch for a nap. I am very affectionate and like to be close to my foster mom, getting pets, and draping myself across her feet. I had my first raw meal this weekend, and it was tasty! I’m a smart girl who comes when I am called. I am playful and like to do zoomies. I love going on walks and like to prowl like the hunting dog I am! I am a little bit skittish, so sometimes noises startle me. I am in a foster home with no other pets because my previous owners told the shelter that I liked to guard my treats and toys against other animals in the house. DC SIR says I will need a minimum 2-week behavior and medical assessment before I can be available for adoption. At that time they will tell you about my health and quirky behavior, so you can see if I would be a good fit in your home. I hope that DC SIR can find me a forever home so that I never have to feel so scared and alone as I did in the shelter. My foster mom is working on my nervousness, but I’ll need an adopter who will continue to help me build my confidence. Could it be you?
